Doing a Newcastle [2031/32]

I'm referring here mainly to a season of dismal performance after continental qualification rather than a tendency to sign French players or wear string vests. Things did not go well.

Transfers

I won't go through them in too much detail but basically we expanded the squad with some free's and got to the point where I thought we had a nice squad size without being too full. We had cover and the cover was young, with some potential.

The two DC's I mentioned before came in. Groot and Murilo.

Both I thought would slot in nicely and do well pretty much straight away. I also got Mirko and Versick to add cover for the wingback positions.

I finally signed a youth keeper, Payen. Who had experience in the league below already.

I also got another midfielder, French Berthier.

Again he looked like he could rotate in and help out as well.

Champions League

We started in the playoffs and we drew Shaktar. A team that on paper looked like they would rip us a new one. I had a feeling that our foray into Europe would be short but painful.

Couldn't have been more wrong. We outplayed them for the 1-0 win but I didn't expect the 6-0 drubbing that came after. Zhiqiang scored all of them, he got himself a double hatrick. Shaktar left traumatised and the club had to issue formal apologies to all the fans who brought children with them because of the mauling they had witnessed.

We then got the kindest draw possible for the next playoff round. We got Besiktas, the weakest team there bar ourselves. It wasn't to be though. They thumped us in the first leg and we never really got back into it in the second.

Europa Cup

Losing in the playoff meant we dropped into the Europa Cup group stage instead. There we would face OM, Real Sociadaed and...Shaktar.

We started well, taking points off OM and Shaktar with two wins. But then we lost against Real both times and lost the return to OM. We were knocked out with a game to go. Still, not bad for a debut in Europe. Prize money alone from both Cups had netted us over £2.5m which put the club in a healthy position.

Superleague

We started okay, but despite how well we did in Europe we didn't manage to carry the form over into the league. We weren't terrible but we didn't reach the dizzy heights of last season. We played fairly well but we didn't close games out and started making mistakes.

Form dropped, heads dropped and my players started to complain that we weren't doing well enough. We were hovering around midtable though so whilst I was frustrated we weren't doing as well as we could I wasn't panicking. We had over half a season to go and once Europe was over we had less squad management issues.

I started  to get dreaded messages though. First Bengondo piped up...

I then got the one loss away from sacking message. Which prompted me to go on a winning streak. That abruptly ended with 3 league losses in a row and the board lost their patience despite me being a runner up in the manager of the year awards.

Sacked!

Bastards.

Yes we weren't doing well but I could have fixed it. I was sacked when we were 9th with over half the season still to play. It wasn't an impossible task but they just didn't give me the time.

So my journey with Platanias came to an end. I was livid as I'd been enjoying it. Even with the poor form I was happy enough as I had a young talented squad developing. Players like Bengondo, Jordan, Ponce, Magill, and Villia looked like they would be Platanias legends of the future.

Still, I left them richer, with a better rep, with improved facilities (the board agreed to improve them after our Europe windfall) and a much better squad. I'd gotten into Europe for the first time in this save and I felt fairly confident that I could move up despite the sacking.

What next?

As above I think I can move on and up. Or at least to an equivalent side so I'm not too worried.

Something I'm thinking of doing though is adding another manager to the save...Rodrigo's younger brother...Tiberius. Mainly because whilst I'm enjoying moving around with Rodrigo I'd like to manage in Northern Ireland and try and build a team/club pretty much from scratch. It's always fun managing there and if you read any of the 1000 goal striker threads on the SI forums from past FM games it's quite inspiring. So a potential plan is to had fresh face Tiberius start at the bottom in N.I. and build whilst Rodrigo makes the best use of his rep and moves around searching for glory.

Maybe you can't win anything with kids [2030/31]

This post might be a bit longer than normal. I think it is probably fair to call the second half of the season eventful.


First of all...recruiting after Thoniatis left. I had my good intentions and I did my best. I spent hours combing over all the players my scouts new below the age of 21 and any extra I could find. I excluded those that I thought wouldn't come, would be too expensive or would ask for big wages. I targeted quite a few Greek players as well.

My success was limited though. Even the players I thought I could get on the cheap commanded pretty big transfer fee's. Greek players valued at £40k or less were going for £700k or more. I only had £1.1m and I didn't want to blow that much on one or two players. I came close with those that I did get but they weren't as risky as an investment as some of the Greek players. I had to go overseas.

I ended up bringing in two midfielders immediately, and two defenders at the end of the season. I'll mention the defenders in the next update.

First...Magill.

Felt a little pricey at £160k but he was heavily recommended and I could see him falling into the CM or AP role. There was enough about him stats wise as well which meant I could probably rotate him into the squad from the off.

Perhaps more impressive, and expensive, was Jordan.

Great technical stats which is what you want when you shell out £500k but he didn't feel expensive. Or at least he didn't feel like an expensive risk. I could see him doing very well and developing into an exceptional player. Again he would slot pretty much straight into the team.

He did take up a Foreign player slot but I didn't go over the limit as I shifted my South African left back Gcantsane to Doxa. He was developing well defensively but didn't look like he'd be a good wing back. He done alright in the games he'd played but he was complaining and wanted more. So I got £50k up front, another 50k in instalments and put a sell on in place. I still had cover for the WBL position in youth signing Bengondo from the year before.

The Second Half of the Season

We carried on with a good run of form. The previous two seasons our form had gone to pot, perhaps because the players were young, but with a bit more experience now they managed to hold on for longer. With 6 games to go we were in 1st place!

Importantly at this point we had pretty much bagged a place in the European playoff stage as well. We had avoided the heartbreak of last season when we missed out on the chance to grab a European place by league sorting rules.

Perhaps more pressing though was the potential title win we could aim for. We were first, in form and had a much easier run in than some. We had mid/low table Larisa, Panaitolikos, Xanthi and relegation strugglers Panathinaikos. The only strong looking teams we had to face were Iraklis and Aris. The whole thing was ours to win or lose.

We started off well by beating Iralkis, other results went our way too and AEK looked like they were choking. It was contagious though and we then lost to Larisa and Panaitolikos (who later were relegated, along with Panathinaikos!).

And that was pretty much it for us then. AEK stayed behind us as they managed to cock up just as much but Olympiakos, who had been poor most of the season, sneaked ahead and stayed there. Our loss against Aris meant that they won it with a game to go.

Oddly disappointing. We weren't meant to be fighting for the title but to lose it when it was very close hurt. Especially when it was so easy to pin point where it was lost - against Larisa and Pana'. If we'd won those, like we were predicted to, we would have won the title. I could see why or how we had lost it too. The body language feedback before and during the game was one of nerves. I was initially confused but then I realised, the team had an average age of 22. The lowest in the league. Lehman was 30, Tavima 28 and Flanagan 27 but after that it dropped to 18-23. The extra years experience had led to less of a flop in form than the previous seasons but we weren't quite there when it came to the crunch. As manager I tried to turn them around but there was only so much I could do in the team talks, or individually after the first match. You do too many individual talks and they lose effectiveness, or lead to confusion. I needed to do about 8 for each match. Too much.

Still I was quite proud despite the pain of missing out. The team had punched well above it's weight and the players had given their all. By the end of the season everyone had played a few times and many players had surprised. I'll mention more about them in a bit because before I can go through them we still had 6 games to play...

European Playoff

2nd place didn't get us a European place. We had to fight for it all over again in a group of four. The top team winning Champions League football, 2nd and 3rd winning Europa and poor 4th place getting squat. Aris, PAOK and AEK were all big teams with good squads. Playing each of them twice would be a big ask. We did however have a 4pt lead because we finished 2nd, but then AEK had 4 also for being 3rd and Aris 2 for being 4th.

It went very well. 4 wins, 1 loss and a draw. With two games to go we'd guaranteed Europa at least, and with one game to go we had the Champions League spot. It took all the pressure of the last game against AEK, who had beaten us before.

So... we had 2nd place and Champions League football (of sorts, we'd still have to qualify!) to look forward to! A great success!

End of Season Review

Successful season on and off the pitch I think. We'd lost players, made money, recruited and set ourselves up for future success with hopefully some European money and kudos to come. We were in the red by the end of the season but only by £800k. Which would likely be wiped out by any coming TV deals. If need be I could cash in on Fengqi and Riscos's sell on clauses to put us back in the black.

We had a couple of young players coming in to join the squad at the end of the season, and we'd managed to recruit a few more in the form of Jordan and Magill.

Importantly the team was playing together well and as I mentioned above we had some very pleasant surprises.



Surprise 1 - Cortoglou

After a slow start he settled right in to being Helmer's replacement. He was solid all the way through the season and formed a really good partnership with Margeno and Philippe. Only the champions had a tighter defense than us.

Surprise 2 - Bengondo

He stepped up to cover for Abbes when he went on prolonged international duty. The other left back player had gone so it was all Benny's. He did so well that by the time Abbes was ready to come back I didn't want him. He just got left on the bench. His stats have shot up which must be down to the effect of playing so well for 24 games. Defensively he played better and he even laid on more goals than Abbes did in his 26 appearances.

Surprise 3 - Ponce

I was just planning on slowly introducing him to see if he had what it took, and then gradually developing him. He made such a good start he played a part in 33 games, scoring 4 and setting up 4. He passed really well and was picking players out from everywhere. He even set up a beauty of a goal with a back heel into the box. Stats wise he still doesn't look great but I'm going to focus his training some more and see if I can get an appropriate tutor to build on things. Stats aside he still plays well and might be one of those players that performs well above himself.

Surprise 4 - Zhiqiang

Okay he shouldn't really count as a surprise but halfway into the season I had serious doubts. He was out alot and in fact he didn't return to the first team until February. When he did though....He started banging them in, against good teams too. He took defenses apart. He twists and turns and then pokes it into the corner. He set quite a few up too and he formed a really good partnership with Flanagan.


Next Season

I have two players coming in but what else is going on? Well Heese is probably leaving. He's okay and he played a bit part in midfield when we needed cover but he is on almost £4k a week and he won't take a pay cut. I can do better for less so when his contract runs out he's gone.

Collin is likely off if I can find a team for him (or the compensation is low enough).

Keeper

Lehman is doing fine and will be 1st choice for a few more years I think but I'm painfully aware that I don't have a back up keeper. I need to get a young promising keeper and start slowly blooding them. It's not urgent but it would be wise.

Defence

The two players coming in are defender's, and one can cover midfield as well. I feel pretty happy in this department aside from cover for the right wingback. Collin didn't cut it and won't accept being back up so he'll be off and I'll need someone else.

If there was interest I'd be tempted to get rid of Abbes and free up a Foreign player spot and some wage money. Bengondo is first choice so I could move Abbes without missing him and replace him with a cheaper model.

Midfield

I feel pretty happy here. With Heese leaving there is maybe room for one more player (especially with the potential demands of Europe) and I have my eye on someone. There is quite a bit of depth here though.

Attack

I'm happy with Zhiqiang, Villia and Flanagan. Ze I'm still not sure about. I think he's okay and he's getting better but he doesn't want to wait for football. If he gets shirty I'll get rid of him but the fans seem to love him. Miron I think I'll be moving on as well. Maybe on loan initially but he's not developing well enough to stay here I think. I'd rather move him on and get a new youth striker to try and rotate in.

It's a little bit like how I feel towards Ze as well. I could get rid of him and free space up in the team and budget for a couple of promising strikers that 'fit' better.


So, all in all I think I need a youth GK, a youth/cover WBR, maybe another youth MC and a youth ST.

Nothing urgent though and nothing that I need to break the bank over.

Expectations

In the league we have to build on this and finish in the top 3 again. It was a hard slog but we have to keep our place and start really pushing for the title. I think we're still a season or two off a real title challenge despite what we've managed this time around but we're not far off.

I'd like to do well in the cup too but I think we need better depth if we're to manage this.

And Europe...I'm desperate to get to the group stage. For money and kudos. It would be a huge boost to the club. At some point we need to expand the 3.5k seater stadium and for that we need money. I'm not going to kid myself though, qualification will be very tough.

Bad Business [2030/31]

Lots of business was done this pre-season. Well not that much actually but there was a lot of money thrown around and I had some decisions to make.

First of all a bid from fellow Superleague team Aris came in for Helmer, which triggered a barrage of bids for the defender. I negotiated them up and put in the standard sell on clauses and finally accepted a handful of offers for £3m plus. In the end Helmer opted for the original bidders Aris and he went on his way for £3.4m plus 25% sell on.

That pretty much wiped out our debt though it obviously  came at the cost of one of our best players. He wanted to go though, we were in the red and there's the chance of more money in the future.

A similar deal ended up being struck for Fengqi. We had fallen out, and then fallen out again over his valuation but I actually got about 7 bids for him close to the £5m, and one from Genk was dead on. In the end he opted for Anderlecht and went for another £3.4m and 25% sell on. I'm hoping that he does well (even though he's a git) so we get more money.

Again I'd lost a key player but with the money we could hopefully recruit replacements and grow.


Recruitment

I brought in 3 players initially.

In defense I brought in a Russian youth player, Afanasjev. Not first team material yet but they would hopefully add cover. I couldn't find someone who would slot straight in and replace Helmer. I found a few potential players, one who could play sweeper and had some interesting (maybe Libero) stats, but I couldn't tempt them over and I lost out. I decided I would promote Courtoglou into Helmer's spot and see how he fared.

 I brought in two strikers, Zhiqiang and Ze. Zhiqiang was actually the striker I'd been trying to get before I opted for Fengqi. He had decent stats, was young enough and came with the bonus of boosting revenue in the far east. I think it's only worked out as an extra £18k so far but it's better than nothing. The problem was he was pricey and I had to spend £500k up front with another £1.5m in instalments. I could have done it for less out right but the board were stingy with what I could reinvest from the sales and I couldn't afford the £1.4m lump sum to activate his release clause.

Ze was on a free and initially looked quite good. A bit slow but young, and a massive 6' 8". Not sure how he would fit in as he seems more of a target man but I think if I can improve his quickness he will be okay.


And that was it for signings. It was at this point I felt like I'd made a mistake. I'd lost two key players (albeit for nearly £7m plus maybe more) and in one instance hadn't made a direct replacement and in the other had spent a lot to bring in replacements. Zhiqiang cost £2m which didn't leave much left over from the £3.4m sale of Fengqi, and when you combine Ze and Zhiq's wages (and sell on's) the rest is wiped out.

It'd all be worth it if they did well but I ran into some issues with them that makes me wonder. First of all Zhiqiang turned up to the club tired, I gave him two weeks off and he when he came back he got injured instantly for 6 weeks, missing the start of the season. Once match fit he managed a run of games and did reasonably well (a goal, an assist) and seemed to be settling. But then he was called up the the Asian U23 games and missed a big chunk as China went all the way to the final again. He came back, got match fit, played a couple of games and then got called up the the senior side for the qualification games missing over a month again. Halfway through the season he has played more international games than club games. So far I've paid £2m for a striker who's managed 7 games, 1 goal and 1 assist. It doesn't seem like value for money and it's difficult to see how well he has settled.

Ze managed to start because of Zhiqiangs jet setting but it took a long time for Ze to even look like scoring. He's massive, he's slow. As the poacher he doesn't really work and as the DLF he seems a little detached. He has started to improve though and has 4 goals, 2 assists in 11 games. He's okay and will get better as he settles.

In isolation Ze and Zhiqiang don't seem too bad but they've been outperformed by Flanagan and Villia as a pairing time and time again. Ze and Zhiqiang don't seem like value yet and I feel like I've wasted a lot of money from the Fengqi transfer. I'm hoping things will change in the second half of the season but it's made me really think hard about my transfer policy and the club. I will go onto the first half of the season in a bit but what has struck me is how small a club we are, and I've not been running it as such. We have a small rep, little history in terms of honours and perhaps most importantly a tiny ground that holds 3700. We sell it our a fair bit and get an average attendance of about 89% but it's size means we have to, at some point, use sales to keep us afloat until we regularly break into Europe. The turnover from the small ground isn't enough to offset the £66k a week wage budget.

This means I have to think about how we use the money we do get. I can't waste it any more. I don't think we can afford to go after big transfers with big wages in the hope of breaking into the top 5. I need to get as many players as I can on as little as possible. I need to buy young players that will do the job for less, or that will do the job and get sold for profit. I know it seems like a simple idea but it's one I've ignored the past few seasons. I've been too loose with the wage budget so now I need to cut back and get real value from my dealings.

So, when I do get cash again there's going to be a change and I think at the end of the season I might make a few bigger changes. All assuming I'm still not in Europe...

The first 17 games

So after all the above how was it going? Pretty well actually. We had more points after the first half of the season we had ever managed before. Not by much but it was a clear improvement - 4th with 33 points.

We'd had a good run of form. The only teams we had lost to had been the ones that were strong in the league, including surprise package Doxa. We'd even got a good win against Panathinaikos though it was a little hollow. Everyone was beating them at the moment as they seem set to flirt with relegation again.

The Cup was a little disappointing. We fought back but an away goal sank us. I think I need to take it more seriously next season. I played a weaker team in the first leg and got punished. Some silverware would be nice.

The squad was doing fairly well and almost everyone is seeing time on the pitch (although limited in some cases).

There is going to be another 'bout of recruitment though as shortly after getting Talent of the Year my midfielder Thoniatis put in a transfer request. I obliged, touted him around and got a reasonable price for him.

That's right. Another £3.4m and 25% sell on. He's a good player but actually I'd benched him a few times and not actually noticed a big difference. Ponce was blossoming this season and I had Carrera and Heese that I could play as well. I did initially hesitate but then I thought back to the transfer issue. If I could reinvest this money wisely I could get more cover for the squad, more players for the future and still maintain our position.

Who I'm going to sign I don't know but I'd love to get at least 3 new players, a DC, MC and ST. The board gave me £1.1m of the money to spend. I was worried about wages as Thoniatis doesn't leave until two days before the standard transfer window...so until he goes I'm still over wage budget by £2k. Once he's gone then I'm under by £3k. That 3 is what I want to spend wage wise really, £1k each, tops.

Though knowing my track record that might be a little difficult.

Can I appeal to get league sorting rules changed? [2029/30]

Well can I?

Actually I should probably pay more attention to the rules so I can avoid any surprises. Or better yet I should concentrate on squeezing out more points from the fixture list so sorting rules don't matter.

Predictably our form dropped off a little. In part due to Fengqi's jaunt with the Chinese U23's. They made it all the way to final on the back of his goals but then lost. So basically he was out for the longest period of time he could be but only brought back a runner's up medal.

Villia stepped into his place and we occasionally went to one up front if need be but it took it's toll.

The key bit is that dip in the form graph on the last day of the season. We went from qualifying for the European playoff stage to just 6th place in that final game. At the time I wasn't worried because I thought our impressive goal difference (+21!) would see us through. When actually what happened was results between teams were used instead and PAOK snuck ahead of us. Bugger.

That wasn't the only bad news either. When Fengqi came back we fell out. I think I had the two longest manager/player chats I've ever had on the game. He told me he wanted to leave, and I told him we could match his ambitions, by qualifying for Europe next year. He said it wasn't enough and from there we just shouted at each other.

Fengqi then asked for a transfer, I listed him but put his value at £5m. I thought that was fair and he disagreed. He wanted another chat but this time to complain about what he though was a prohibitive price tage. Nice touch from SI to get around the old favourite of slapping on a stupid price to scare teams away but I did think 5m was about fair for him. And if a bid comes in, close to that I think I'll have to take it. The club isn't doing well financially.

There was a little bit of good news though. Greek midfielder Thoniatis got his first cap!

End of Season Review

So we got more points than last season, finished better than before but still missed out on Europe. Next season we have to cement our place so we don't slip out right at the end. I'm not sure squad wise what we need for that. I don't think we're desperate for a player in any particular position. It mightjust be a case of letting the players I have develop and only going in for a great youth prospect or a player that definitely looks like improving the first team.

Not that I'll be doing much unless I sort the finances out. I might have to tout Fengqi around, and I need to get rid of Riscos.

Generally the team was good though.

A few stand out performers though.

Upfront:

As much of a child as he was we owed a lot to Fengqi. Flanagan was settling in well though I need to sort his training out. Villia was stepping up and maturing nicely.

Elsewhere:

Helmer and Thoniatis, rocks in defense and midfield respectively. They both chipped in with goals and when they were out or tired I could feel the knock on effect throughout the team. The backline became weaker and less organised and the engine in midfield seemed to drop off (though Tavima took up slack).

There are teams sniffing around both of them. I might be forced to sell because of finances but unless I can replace them we would struggle.

The plan for next season?

Ideally more of the same with a few extra wins to push us into Europe. We don't need to rebuild at the moment but there might be some movement if players have to go.
